VOLUNTEERING

In modern times, Volunteering has become an institution assisting the combat of social, financial and environmental problems, aiming at the common good and the participation in community life and fills the gaps created by the state’s inability and the market’s mechanisms.

Within this framework, in late years our country has seen the rise of many Non-Governmental Organizations with many volunteer actions mainly regarding the Environment, Culture, Social Services and Development Programs.

Most of these organizations depend on volunteering work, while others have a network of paid employees and volunteers.
Volunteering is not just a term, it is a complex process and way of life, as it favorably influences society, it concerns all of us, independently of social and financial discrimination, it promotes the active participation of citizens and the defence of basic rights, reinforcing social solidarity and cohesion.

A volunteering act aims not only at the timely facing of a problem, but also, depending on the case, at facing its causes, strengthening those afflicted and the continuous operation of the support structures.

The NCSS as the main public actor of welfare work, has the goal of promoting volunteering, through developing the conditions/framework of volunteering work in its structures, with the final goal of bringing awareness and mobilizing citizens, against modern social problems and strengthening the social support networks.

The development of actions promoting volunteering is part of the NCSS responsibilities and at the same time, an important means to promote and support its multi-level work.
